When it comes to personal branding, there is no need to compete. Celebrate the success of the people around you. There is an alarming statistic that suggests by th There is an alarming statistic that suggests by the age of 51 many women feel invisible. As someone who has just turned 40, the idea of being invisible in just over a decade is terrifying. Add to that I have had more than one client say "I have to hurry up and get out there, no one wants to listen to an old lady". This narrative has to change and the only way to make it happen is for women of all ages to become more visible. It is part of the reason why I am so passionate about the work I do with internationally acclaimed photographer @nickleary_ . To give women the opportunity to not only have a spectacular portrait taken by a master, but to then walk away with the confidence to use the photos to put themselves out there. They are actually excited to take that speaking gig or interview because they are not dreading sharing some awkward and unattractive corporate 'school photo'.We have our final shoot for 2022 coming up in Sydney this October (14/15) and if you are interested in learning more, please check out the link via bio ❤️🙏🏻 #thebrandinyou #profilebynickleary

My newsletter subscribers will be invited to exclusively attend the masterclass in real time and have the opportunity to ask the expert questions (if you are interested in signing up please do so via the link in the comments section below). So many exciting sessions planned including- 'How to speak like you're giving your next TED talk' and 'The psychology of style and how it impacts your personal brand'. I have spent the entire day pitching. I know how e I have spent the entire day pitching. I know how exhausting it can be (and exciting at the same time). Having spent so many years in PR I have become somewhat immune to a lack of response, I know nothing happens without a follow up and I try my best never to take a ‘no’ personally. To all the other entrepreneurs, business owners, side hustlers, influencers and aspiring thought leaders- keep going. Consistency is key and you really never know which seed, once planted, might bloom into an incredible opportunity that will change your life forever 🙏🏻❤️🤩 #thebrandinyou
I believe every person we encounter in life comes I believe every person we encounter in life comes into our orbit for a reason. Some inevitably have more of an impact than others and there are a special few that literally shape the course of your life. Leon is one of those people for me.

When I was 19 I sent my resume to Hay House Australia hoping to get a job. After a series of incredible synchronicities I found myself in Leon's office. He was, and still is, the Managing Director of the brand. In that first meeting he said "I think you would be great in PR". Those few words would inspire me to study PR and then launch my own consultancy. Leon introduced me to my first clients.

At 33, when I was trying to work out my next career move, I approached Leon to see if he could recommend any new clients for me to represent. He said "become your own brand". I am now dedicated to doing that and helping others do the same.

Leon is in his 70's though he has the energy of a teenager. He is one of my favourite people in the whole wide world and I will never be able to truly express my gratitude for all that he has done. Funny thing is, he probably doesn't even realise. That is the thing in life, sometimes we don't know how much of an impact we will have on others, all we can do is manage our intentions. One person can literally change your life and we all have the power to be that one person for others.

The other day I was invited to be interviewed on a The other day I was invited to be interviewed on a podcast. As per podcast etiquette I received an outline of the questions that were going to be asked. I knew as soon as I saw them, they were wrong, but I did exactly what I tell other people NOT to do and I went ahead with the interview anyway.

Everything about the interview was great and I gave it my all, but the truth is, I knew I was positioning myself in the wrong way. When I talk about personal branding, I often refer to the 4P’s – Promise, Packaging, Position and Promotion. I use the analogy of a product and explain that where you physically place the product has a huge impact on how the audience interacts with it. For example, you would never see a Chanel perfume sitting on the shelf next to toothpaste in the supermarket aisle. There is a very good reason for that.

When it comes to your personal brand, it is important you are also aware of where you want to sit other people’s minds. What do you want them to think about when they see your name? It is one thing to be top of mind, but you want to be top of mind for all the right reasons. What stops most people from dictating how they are positioned, is perfectly summed up in my own not so rookie error. We leave it up to others because we think we should or have to. As a result, we end up attracting the wrong people, places and opportunities into our life and wonder why.

If you are questioning how to ‘position’ yourself effectively, here are 3 simple tips-

1. Get clear on how you want to be recognised and remembered
2. Communicate that at every touchpoint e.g. your professional bio, social media platforms
3. Say no to any opportunity that doesn’t resonate with the above and/or dictate the terms of the opportunity. For example, I could have easily responded to the host with “I would love to do the interview on the basis we talk about xyz”

Time is the most valuable resource we have. Say yes to the life and career you want by saying no to everything that doesn’t position you in the flow to get it. I would love your thoughts on this.

“Honey you haven’t washed your hair and you ha “Honey you haven’t washed your hair and you have been wearing the same clothes for over a week, I know something is wrong.”These were my husband’s precise words said out of love. I was on extended maternity leave and despite the fact I had made the decision to return to work, I was convinced all of my experience and expertise had been swiftly removed with baby wipes. I felt lost, insecure, and uncertain about what my future would look like. It was a challenging time to say the least and one I am happy is in the past.It is why when @tina_randello, Chief Commercial Officer at @alphahskincare approached me about contributing to their return-to-work program, The Encoreship 2022, I did not hesitate for a moment. 7 amazing brands including: @mamamiaaus, @adorebeauty , @sixdegreesexecutive , @shonajoy , @wittnershoes, @gritty_pretty and @alphahskincare created 10 roles to help women return to work offering them specific training, networking opportunities and the tools they need to secure the roles they want.Over the past month, I delivered a virtual workshop series designed to empower each of these women to proactively elevate their personal brand and remember their time spent shaping future generations (aka parenting) only adds to their transferable skills and value. They control the narrative. I was there to inspire them, but the truth is they inspired me.I want to take this moment to applaud each of these incredible women and in fact, all the parents out there who stepped away from their careers to raise their kids and had the courage to come back. It is not easy and I only hope more companies support parents on this journey. I really believe the path to career success doesn’t have to be a straight line, or even a continuous one, perhaps it looks more like a scribble or a zig zag. It doesn’t really matter, all that matters is you keep writing it your way. I hope this helps.#thebrandinyou #personalbranding #returntowork

Just over 3 years ago I would have told you social Just over 3 years ago I would have told you social media was for those who were 'trying' too hard and with way too much time on their hands. That was, of course, until I had the courage to put myself out there. In hindsight, maybe I would have said all those things because they supported my fear and kept me in my comfort zone.

Last week alone, I received three new speaking inquiries from high profile brands all who found me on LinkedIn. I also got confirmation that I have been officially listed as a contributor for a high-profile business publication (more to come on that shortly) and I have no doubt my social “currency” helped get that across the line. Add to that, I literally just finished writing an outline for a potential new client based in Dubai whom I have not met in person but connected with on, you guessed it, LinkedIn.

I am not trying to sell you anything right now. I am just sharing a real lesson I learned and that is- stop making assumptions about social media before you have any real experience. Get off the sidelines and be brave enough to share of yourself. You honestly don't know what opportunities you are missing out on. Trust me, the upside is so much greater than the possibility you will be judged, and the truth is, those who judge you poorly, are probably just scared themselves.

When I was 18, I worked in a busy pizzeria to supp When I was 18, I worked in a busy pizzeria to support myself while I was studying. I remember one day after a particularly gruelling lunch service period I was enjoying a break outside. The owner came over, sat down and asked me what I wanted to do with my life. I don’t recall the details of what I said but I imagine I expressed my lofty dreams and exciting ambitions.

He looked up at me exhausted and said, “it is so nice to be young and dream. Just wait until you are older and have kids, a mortgage and reality sets in”. He then walked back into the pizzeria and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Even as young as I was, I knew his attitude and mindset was not helping shape his reality in a good way.

I am now 40. I am married, I have a mortgage and I have kids. I still have lofty dreams and exciting ambitions. I am also surrounded by individuals in their 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and even 80’s that are the same. My mentor is 74 going on 17 and I often refer to my Mum as my daughter. I intend to live by the words of Tao Porchon Lynch, the 99-year-old yoga master who said “I don’t believe in age. I believe in energy. Don’t let age dictate what you can and cannot do”. From a personal branding perspective, these are powerful words to keep in mind with every decision you make. I would love your thoughts on this.

The first time I pitched to be interviewed on live The first time I pitched to be interviewed on live television I ended up in tears. I retreated into the arms of my husband as a blubbering mess. Worried something serious had happened he asked, “my god honey what happened?”, to which I replied “I pitched to be on television”, you can imagine his confusion.

The story does not end there. The producer said yes and a date for my interview was booked. I was there at the Skynews studio at my allotted time and the interview was over in less than 3 minutes. I thanked everyone, had a photo with the presenter, and quickly retreated to my car where I cried again. It was all so overwhelming, and I was so far out of my comfort zone.

Why am I telling you all of this?

Because the tears were not a sign that I shouldn’t do it. As an introvert, they were simply a sign that I was stretching, growing, and pushing myself. If I had read the signs in the wrong way, I would have quickly shut down the opportunity before it came to fruition.

When we set out on the path of putting ourselves out there and expanding our sphere of influence, we must be able to translate the different kinds of fear in our life. This is especially true for introverts who might confuse their natural tendencies for fear and proof they belong behind the scenes. It is precisely why I have written a short e-book titled 'An Introvert's Guide to Personal Branding'. If you are interested, you can access it via the link in bio. I am hoping to inspire more people who think they belong behind the scenes to realise that is not always the truth. I would love your thoughts on this.

Most of the professionals I know and work with rec Most of the professionals I know and work with recognise the power of personal branding and shaping their reputation. They have thought about it at length but often get stuck worrying they will do it "wrong" and scared they will be judged by others for giving it a go. I know, I have been there.Having now coached and spoken to hundreds of entrepreneurs + executives around the world, here are the three non-negotiable stages of building a profile you need to prepare for-1. Confusion- it is normal to not know what you want to say. In order to find your voice you have to use it. This means accepting you will go through a phase of putting ideas, thoughts and content out there to see what resonates and importantly what feels right for you.2. Embarrassment- you will post something on social media and get very little to no response. It will probably happen more than once. You will think it is the end of the world and I am here to tell you it is not. No one is thinking about you or what you post for longer than a few seconds. They are too busy thinking about themselves. Celebrate the fact you belong to the small minority giving it a go rather than putting it in the too hard basket.3. Doubt- in the beginning it will feel like you are wasting your time and simply stroking your own ego, patience is key. It will take time to develop an audience, build trust and experience momentum. It is not a question of if building a profile works, it is what are you going to do to make your profile work for you.Everyone has to start from the beginning. Take action and remember 20 minutes of doing something is more valuable than 20 hours of thinking about doing something. I would love your thoughts on this.#thebrandinyou #personalbranding #linkedin(Quote- @motivatedmindset)
I worked as a hairdresser in my late teens. I didn I worked as a hairdresser in my late teens. I didn’t want to be at school and that was the only way my parents would agree to me leaving. Though my career in the trade was short lived (3 years), I gained invaluable life lessons and experiences that continue to shape who I am today.

There is one story I will never forget. I had just been given freedom to take on my own clients which meant new clients to the salon were often allocated to me. I clearly remember this woman walking in on a mission.

In no time at all, I would discover after a messy divorce she wanted to completely reinvent herself. Over the course of 3 hours and several glasses of champagne, she went from a long blonde conservative hairstyle to short red and entirely vivacious. It wasn’t so much the hair I remember; it was her entire demeanour. As the hair fell to the ground, it was if she was letting go of other things in her past as well.

What I witnessed that day was the power of reinventing yourself from the outside in. From a personal branding perspective, sometimes starting on the surface is the best place to begin. Perhaps we don’t know what we want to do next or how it is going to happen, all we know is it is time to change and that can be a fun place to start! I would love your thoughts on this.

(Quote- George Bernard Shaw)
At the young age of 55, my Mum sold her house in A At the young age of 55, my Mum sold her house in Australia, gave away most of her belongings, and went on a solo trip around the world. She went hot ballooning in Turkey, paragliding in Croatia, hiking through Peru, and detoxed in Thailand. She decided to then walk the Camino De Santiago where she met a man, fell in love, and moved to Spain. They are now engaged to get married and have started a business taking others on the Camino De Santiago. My mum is my hero.

My mum does not have a fancy title, she does not live in a big house on the water, drive a luxury car, or have any of the trappings you would typically see as a symbol of success. She has something much more important, a willingness to challenge the conventional in order to live a life of no regret.

I hope my mum's story is a reminder for you today that success is not one size fits all, and as far as I am concerned, getting to the end of your life with no regrets has to be the greatest success of all. I would love your thoughts on this.

I recently started working with a client who is un I recently started working with a client who is unquestionably a leader in their field. It would not be an exaggeration to even say they are one of the world’s leading experts in their space. The first time I googled them; however, the results did not paint that picture at all.

In a Podcast interview with Tim Ferris, Mark Zuckerberg said (and I am paraphrasing slightly here) “there is the physical world and the online world, yet both are the real world”. This really hit home for me. Ten years ago, you might have been forgiven for seeing the online world as something other than real. Today, there is no denying it is inextricably linked to everything we do, how we connect with one another, the way we shape our identity and manage our reputations.

It is no longer enough to say you are an expert, you need to show you are an expert and that involves sharing your ideas online via your own platforms and other reputable online media, elevating your visual identity and communication assets to the level you would expect from an expert (this includes your profile shot and videos) and publicly aligning yourself with other leaders in your field.

Anyone who works in the personal branding space will tell you the first thing you need to do to audit your personal brand is google yourself (in private mode). I agree and remember what you see is real and it does matter. If you don’t see anything at all, that says more than you think and not in a good way. I would love your thoughts on this.
